Camp Smith colonel tapped for one-star rank

Air Force Col. Abel Barrientes, mobilization assistant to the director of operations at Pacific Command headquarters, has been nominated for promotion to brigadier general, the Pentagon announced Friday.

Barrientes has been on the job at Camp Smith since March.

A 1982 Air Force Academy graduate, he is a command pilot and former vice commander of the 4th Air Force at March Air Force Base, Calif. He has flown numerous types of aircraft, including the C-5 Galaxy transport jet.

In 2006, he was the senior adviser to the Iraqi air force.
