The city is reminding Oahu residents that refuse collection crews will not be working today and Jan. 2 to observe the Christmas and New Year holidays.

People whose trash is scheduled for pickup on Mondays should leave their gray carts curbside. The carts will be picked up a day or two after the holiday, the city said.

People whose green waste and mixed recyclables (green and blue carts) are scheduled for pickup on Mondays should hold them for the next pickup date after Jan. 2.

People on twice-weekly manual refuse pickup should hold their trash until the next pickup following Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.

Christmas Day and New Year's Day are the only two holidays observed by city refuse workers, who work Monday through Saturday.

City refuse convenience centers, transfer stations, HPOWER and Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day but will be open Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.

People can recycle Christmas trees by removing all ornaments, tinsel and flocking and cutting the trees to fit in green waste carts with the lid closed. Residents on a manual collection route should cut their trees into 3-foot lengths, bundle them and set them out with the trash.

Condominium residents and others may drop off trees at a city refuse convenience center.
