Eight people are homeless after a fire destroyed a large multi-story home in Kona, Hawaii County firefighters said.

A pet dog died in the fire, which was reported at 4:53 p.m. Friday and fully engulfed the home by the time firefighters arrived, Battalion Chief Reuben Chun said.

The home, near Wailua Road, was completely destroyed. No one was home at the time, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Chun said eight people lived in the home. The dog that died was outside, while a dog in the house was rescued.

Red Cross volunteers responded to the scene to help the family affected with shelter and their immediate needs.
