Police: Pakistani Taliban leader dies in shootout

By Associated Press

POSTED:

KARACHI, Pakistan » Pakistani police say they have killed a local Taliban commander and arrested his associate after a shootout in a southern port city.

Chief of Karachi's criminal investigations division Fayyaz Khan says two policemen were also wounded in Saturday's gunfight.

He says the slain militant commander, Yaseen Shah, opened fire when officers intercepted his car on a road and demanded that he stop.

Khan says Shah was behind a number of assassinations in Karachi. He did not provide further details, but the Pakistani Taliban have been accused of attacks on members of the Shiite minority and others in the country's south.
