Martin Luther King Jr. Day is expected to be humid, hazy, cloudy and possibly rainy for the islands, forecasters say.

The statewide forecast calls for mostly cloudy and hazy conditions with scattered showers, possibly heavy at times, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds from the south are bringing vog from Kilauea volcano and relatively moist air from the tropics, they said. A series of cold fronts have stalled north of the island,  causing the southerly winds and cutting off cooling trade winds, forecasters say.

The southerly winds may be moderately strong at 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts.

The humid and hazy weather will continue until at least Wednesday as the winds shift to the east. Trade winds could return on Friday.

A flood advisory for Hawaii island was lifted at 1 p.m. today. The advisory came after  heavy rain over the Puna district, weather service forecasters said this morning. Heavy showers stalled over the Puna and Kau coast this morning, with rain gauges showing 2 to 3 inches an hour falling at about 6:30 a.m.
