Speed is a possible factor in a crash that killed a 47-year-old motorcyclist in Salt Lake, police said.

The Aiea man was driving a 2005 Kawasaki north-bound on Bougainville Drive when he lost control and veered into oncoming traffic at 5:14 p.m. Wedensday. He fell off the motorcycle and collided into the front bumper and grill of a Ford Explorer SUV, police said.

The man was wearing a helmet, but sustained massive head and internal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 45-year-old Honolulu woman who was driving the SUV was not hurt..

It was the fifth traffic-related death on Oahu this year compared to eight at this time last year.
