NFL commish puts Pro Bowl on endangered list

Goodell says quality of this year's game shows changes are needed, possibly even an end to the game

INDIANAPOLIS >> NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he is disappointed in the quality of last week's Pro Bowl and changes must be considered, perhaps even dropping the game altogether.

Speaking on ESPN Radio, Goodell said this year's Pro Bowl wasn't "the kind of football we want to be demonstrating to our fans, and you heard it from the fans — the fans were actively booing in the stands."

Goodell made his remarks on Sunday, hours before the start of the Super Bowl.

Goodell has spoken to the NFL Players Association about his disappointment, adding, "We are going to either have to improve the quality of what we are doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes, or even consider eliminating the game if that is the kind of quality of game we are going to provide."

The AFC won the game 59-41.

It's outlived its usefulness. I have no problem ending it. Just do it.

I have no problem with it ending -- BUT -- I'd love to see that old idea of replacing it with Super Bowl Jr. and the runner up teams. I bet some of the games will rival or beat the Super Bowl and it would be a "real" game with intact teams. Every seat in Aloha Stadium will sell out at PREMIUM PRICES in two hours.

Rather see the NFL get rid of Goodell before they get rid of the Pro Bowl!

It sounds like he had this plan all along! Why else would he move the Pro Bowl away from the city that saved it, and move it earlier than the Superbowl without creating incentives for winning? The only incentives for winning are an additional $25,000: a lot of money for normal people, but not for those millionaires. Make winning the pro bowl matter, and then you will see the players play harder.

Yes, it looks like the plan is to set the Pro Bowl up for failure so they can use that as an excuse to move it out of Hawaii.

football is a collision sport so it is hard to go full speed and not risk injury. can't blame the players but it the game is abolished, it will affect Hawaii. it is a tough call, even with all the special rules to limit injury, the players are still cautious. the product has diminished in quality so it might as well be eliminated. maybe, instead of tackling, they should play flag football.

They are called "pro's" yet they play like a grade school pick up game. I wouldn't spend a dime on these lack luster players.

Make it a real game #1 for the following season. The winning conference gets a win and the losing conference gets a loss. All the teams in the conference. So all the winning conference teams would start the following season 1-0.

Instead of NFC vs AFC, have Pro Bowl first-timers (not necessarily rookies) vs. veterans. You'll get half new faces and half old-timers. At least each group will have something to prove since it isn't about the money.

The question should be asked as to why these millionaires need a few K as an inducement to take a vacation here.
