Firefighters continue to monitor Kona brush fire

KAILUA-KONA >> Big Island firefighters continue to monitor a brush fire that got dangerously close to Kailua-Kona homes.
Kailua Fire Station Capt. Todd Vincent says nine firefighters spent the night at the scene putting out hot spots along the fire's perimeter. Tuesday afternoon's fire was contained with an hour and a half. Vincent says flames got within about 15 feet from several structures, including homes, an elderly housing facility and a small college.
The cause remains is under investigation but doesn't appear suspicious.
Dry grass and kiawe trees allowed the fire to spread quickly, prompting an evacuation in the Pines neighborhood. Residents were allowed back in their homes late Tuesday and Red Cross officials closed an emergency shelter at about 9 p.m. About 25 people evacuated to the shelter Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the fire scene today.
