Barack Obama requests $250M for Honolulu's rail project

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 07:36 a.m. HST, Feb 14, 2012

President Barack Obama has requested $250 million for the Honolulu rail transit project in the coming fiscal year.

U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye said that's the largest amount for any rail project in the country. The Obama administration requested $150 million for a San Francisco light rail project.

Inouye says the Federal Transit Administration funds will help complete a project that's needed for job creation, decreasing dependence on imported oil and offering West Oahu residents an alternative to driving into Honolulu.

He says the support from the federal government for the project is "unprecedented."

Hawaii's congressional delegation in Washington say they will continue to ensure the project receives its share of federal funding.

Golly, that's about 15% of the amount the Feds said they'd cough up. Well, let's start building those rail cars, Bunky.

This is NOT free money nor does this money come from the U.S. government. It comes from hardworking people who pay taxes both increases in taxes and new taxes.

This money would be better spent given BACK to these people thus FAMILIES and given BACK so that the keiki and MO'OPUNA CAN USE THIS MONEY.

No, so the US economy can have access to Canadian oil which reduces our dependency on other countries' oil. But I guess you are just jealous about corporations making money and would cut off your nose to spite your face. You should develop a better understanding of how the world works. Sometimes corporations do valuable things for the economy which benefits everyone, and sometimes they make profits.

Just build a pipeline from Canada to a NEW oil refinery to be built in Montana just south of the Canadian border and distribute the gasoline to the lower 48 from there. Why build a 1,500 mile pipeline to Texas? The pipeline would be as useless as digging a hole to China.

What a joker that Barry. He knows he cannot get his "budget" - aka campaign ad - through the Democratic controlled Senate much less the Republican controlled House, so why not promise everyone everything?

Why $250 million only? According to city officials, the feds are suppose to provide $1.5 billion fo rail, so where is the rest of the money?

Good question and yes, Senator Reid will not bring the budget up for rejection in the Senate with 51 "D" power until after the election. Obama pwns Boehner in the House. The National GOP is running scared. Watch them roll over on the Payroll Tax Extension. Obama is too strong and too smart. Go Barry Go !

Obama's budget and the $250 million will never be approved by the republican house.

Obama's goal is to make them take a vote against it though; being the always delivering obstructionist Congress that the public narrative expects of House leadership by now. Obama is playing Chess. The National Dems benefit from not having a budget. It has been over 1000 days.

Building rail is NOT taking care of the infrastructure. The greedy rich? Congress needs to cut out the loopholes in our tax laws to prevent people/coporations from abusing the system.

I have to laugh everytime someone says "greedy rich". First of all, define rich please. Secondly, I see a lot more middle to poor (under $100,000 income) people exhibiting greedy behaviors. Look at events where they offer freebies. Guess who's in line for them. We're all greedy. I never heard of anyone dreaming or wishing for a few thousand dollars. I never heard of anyone being satisfied with their income. We all want more. The only difference is the rich have what we want.
