Days after returning from the Academy Award ceremony in Los Angeles, Kaui Hart Hemmings was recognized by the state Senate for the success of her novel “The Descendants.”

The George Clooney movie based on Hemmings’ novel won an Oscar for the Best Adapted Screenplay.

On Thursday, the Hawaii Senate gave Hemmings a certificate of recognition for her success.

Sen. Majority Leader Brickwood Galuteria said the Senate was very proud of Hemmings and the role she played in showcasing Hawaii and telling the story of life in the islands through the eyes of a ‘kamaaina.’

The film was shot in Honolulu and Kauai’s Hanalei Bay. Its soundtrack features Hawaiian music from Gabby Pahinui, Ray Kane, Keola Beamer, Lena Machado, Sonny Chillingworth, Jeff Peterson and Reverend Dennis Kamakahi.

How come this news story left out the part where part-Hawaiian Senator Clayton Hee rightfully chastised Grove Farms whose former owners the Wilcox family was the family upon which this novel was based, and who is kicking long time plantation workers and residents out of their plantation houses so that they can sell the land. Looks like real life is not like the novel, in real life the family does the wrong thing. Also, why isn't the Portuguese/Japanese Kauai senator Ron Kouchi saying something. Why does the Oahu/Molokai senator have to be the voice of the people?
