Texas A&M knocks off UH softball team

LAST UPDATED: 9:38 p.m. HST, Mar 16, 2012

Texas A&M pitcher Mel Dumezich struck out 14 hitters and drove in a run to help power the Aggies to a 3-1 win over the University of Hawaii softball team tonight at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Dumezich set a career high in strikeouts and went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double as the Aggies, ranked No. 21 and 22 in this week's national polls, knocked off the No. 18/19 Rainbow Wahine in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

UH took the lead in the bottom of the first when Sharla Kliebenstein drew a bases-loaded walk. But Texas A&M (19-8) fought back with a three-run rally in the fifth. With two out and two runners on base, Meagan May's popup into shallow left field fell in to score the tying and go-ahead runs and Dumezich followed with an RBI double.

Unlike Thursday's upset of No. 1/2 California, the Wahine couldn't put together a comeback and fell to 23-2.

UH pitcher Stephanie Ricketts gave up nine hits walked four, struck out four and took the loss.

The Wahine close the tournament against Winthrop at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
