A brushfire burning near Kahului Airport was 40 percent controlled Saturday and had burned about 20 acres.

The fire started about 10:20 a.m. on the airport side of Stable Road and officials evacuated one person from a home. Maui Fire Department spokesman Lee Maniaga said flying embers have caused some roof damage, but no structures were lost.

Several fire companies, including state and county work crews, were at the scene, trying to contain the blaze.

Dan Meisenzahl, of the state Department of Transportation, said the fire was not affecting airport operations. He said the fire is next to runway 523, which is mainly used by small aircraft.

Firefighters estimated the fire burned 20 acres.
