Hawaii bankruptcy filings fell in March for 13th straight month

Bankruptcies filings in Hawaii fell in March for the 13th consecutive month, according to data released today by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The 267 cases filed in March was down 25.4 percent from the 358 cases filed the same month a year earlier, the court reported. Bankruptcy filings have been trending lower since averaging 330 a month during the recent peak in 2010.

Bankruptcy filings have averaged 234 a month during for the first three months of the year, down from an average of 277 a month in 2011.

Bankruptcies fell in all counties. In Honolulu County the number of cases fell 25.6 percent to 163 in March from a year before.

Filings fell to 49 in Maui County, a 22.2 percent decline from March 2011. In Hawaii County they fell 8.5 percent to 43 cases and in Kauai County they fell 58.6 percent to 12 cases.
