Hawaii County to get five hybrid electric cars

By Associated Press

POSTED:

Hawaii County is getting five Chevy Volt hybrid electric cars for its fleet.

Mayor Billy Kenoi plugging in the first of the vehicles Tuesday during a ceremony at West Hawaii Civic Center, the county said on its website.

Each vehicle cost $47,000, but the county will receive a $4,500 credit for each car through the state's EV-Ready rebate program.

The Volt runs on electricity stored in a battery, but it has a backup gas engine that kicks in when its battery is drained.

The county expects the cars will be used by the departments of parks and recreation, planning, and housing and community development.
