Arkansas school band also missing Hawaii trip money

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. >> Two high school marching bands were preparing for trips to Hawaii this summer when their travel agent suddenly stopped answering their phone calls and emails.

Now, the bands — one in Arkansas and the other in Missouri — are trying to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars they sent to the travel agent. Some of that money was raised by students, who sold candy bars and cheesecakes to help defer the cost of their trips.

The Southside High School Rebel Band in Fort Smith, Ark., canceled its trip to the islands after assistant band director Sean Carrier said the band wired more than $250,000 to the travel agent. They're planning a trip to Orlando, Fla., with the money they have left.

Meanwhile, Chris Church, the band director at Willard High School in Missouri said his band's trip is in limbo after they wired about $360,000 to the travel agent.

"I don't have a flight schedule. I don't have our confirmation on our hotels," Church said. "Could those airline reservations be there? Sure. Could those hotel reservations be there? Sure."

But he said there's been a lack of communication with the travel agent, who finally emailed to him and the band directors at Southside after weeks of radio silence.

"He made an apology for being tardy in correspondence and he was in the process of repaying our money," Church said.

Carrier, the assistant band director in Fort Smith, said the travel agent apologized to them, too.

"I made some terrible decision with the money and am now in the midst of trying to sell every asset I have in Samoa to pay the group back," the travel agent wrote in an email to Carrier. "It will be a slow process so I beg of your patience as my number one priority to get every cent I owe to the group."

The travel agent hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing, though band directors at both schools say they've been in touch with authorities. Federal prosecutors in both states refused to say whether they looking into the travel agent's actions.

"We cannot confirm or deny the existence of any pending investigation," Conner Eldridge, the U.S. Attorney in the Western District of Arkansas, said in a statement.

The travel agent didn't respond to emails seeking comment. The phone number listed on his website wasn't accepting calls.

"He has more or less disappeared," Carrier said.

Both bands had worked with the travel agent on successful trips to Hawaii before. The Southside band traveled to the islands in 2006 and 2009, while the Willard band went to Hawaii in 2004 and 2008.

"That's why this is such a big shock," Church said.

The Southside students, who play songs including Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" during football season, were planning to perform something a bit more reverent when they visited Pearl Harbor. They would have seen how pineapples grow and sunbathed on the beach.

"Everyone waits since their seventh grade year to go to Hawaii," said Hannah Lovins, a high school senior who plays the flute and sold cheesecake to pay for part of her trip.

Earlier SA articles listed the travel agent name: Ope Saaga. In Jan 2012 he and his family of 6 had been living in Highland Utah.....in a hugh house and a caddy Escalade(sp). Since Ope fled to American Samoa he then fled to Western Samoa thinking he'd beyond American reach. Five boundy hunters are looking for him since there is a $70,000.00 reward to catch him. You can run but you can't hide. Ope's gonna have to sell alot of banana and coconuts to pay back what he owes....auwe! On Facebook, his wife said she is divorcing him. Her parents(Hawaiian/Maori) in Hauula were never impressed with Ope in the first place and thought she could have married better.........sad, sad. sad.

That's why he took advantage of them. They trusted him from previous trips, so they were easy targets. Hope he gets caught and spend a LOOONG time in prison. That's the kind of people that belong there.

For this incident, , and other prior to this pilikia the State Legislature MUST pass a bill requiring all TRAVEL AGENCY post 2,000,000. BOND with the DCCA. The travel agency can buy these bonds from any bonding insurance company in Hawaii.

what wouldnt they just get a local (their local, not ours) travel agent. Not like you get a better deal from one or the other. They are never going to get all their money back. Poor kids, trip of a lifetime and they are taken by thieves.

Turn lemons into lemonade. While the State and Federal authority chase after this crooked travel agent and seize whatever assets he currently has, HTA needs to work with an airline company, hotel and a transportation company to all of the band members and their chaperones to fly, stay and travel at no initial charge in exchange for free publicity, including the band has to carry banners and temporary iron-on patches of the hotel, airline and transportation company that helped them out. It will be up to HTA to make sure this story makes national and world news with the storyline of mainland high schools "lifetime dream" trip of visiting and performing in Hawaii and the travel agent who ripped them off and then tried to flee to Samoa. To the "rescue" is the State of Hawaii HTA governemnt agency in conjunction with "X" Airlines, "Y" Hotel, and "Z" bus company. Even if all of these companies have to take some loss in the end., the widespread and incredibly positive publicity for the State of Hawaii and these companies would be worth million times over. You cannot buy this type of positive, worldwide publicity for the State of Hawaii and these companies who help these kids out..

Why doesn't this news article report the name of the travel agent, the name of the company, the address, etc? I can see no reason to omit this important information. And if there is a good reason to keep the travel agent's name private, then include that as part of the story.
