A former Fern Elementary School secretary admitted today to stealing nearly $15,000 from the school, including writing checks from the Kalihi school's account to pay for her rent in public housing.

Williamina Muranaka pleaded guilty to 12 counts of theft, one of attempted theft and one of bribery this morning in state court.

The attempted theft count is the result of one of the rent checks bouncing. The bribery charge is for accepting gift cards worth more than $2,000 and candy from a school vendor for ordering overpriced printer/toner cartridges.

Muranaka, 44, faces up to 10 years in prison when she is sentenced in July. However, according to the terms of her plea agreement, if she pays back the $14,818 she stole, the state attorney general promises to seek a one-year jail term and probation.

Absolutely agree. How much has the vendor ripped off from you and me. Remember, we are the ones who pay the taxes that buy all these things.

Locking her up for good will cost us how much? The latest estimate is $80,000 a year per inmate in the prison system. Better yet, don't put her in jail. Let her try to find a job. Maybe shovelling horse droppings but no where close to anyones money. Been down and out but never stole money or anything from anyone. It always comes back to bite you in the okole. Obviously, she has been having a rough time but at least she had a job. Sad state of affairs, really. I believe somewhere in her mind, she feels that she is and was entitled and that the "system" owed it to her. Now she pays it back. Karma calling.

What is this, the 3rd (or 4th) similar case with secretaries/assistants stealing from the schools? Where's the DOE oversight , audits and check & balances? NONE.

Doesn't surprise me that the crook was in admin. That's where the budget needs to be trimmed, in the admin of the schools. We pay them too much, there's too many of them and they're a protected species due to the pandering of the machine in exchange for blind loyalty.

DOE needs more money from the taxpayers so more of its employees can steal it. Muronaka is the third of fourth DOE employee caught steeling taxpayers' money within the past two years. Caught. How many more are there who have supplementing their pay by stealing but have not yet been caught?

What I don't understand is why she needed to steal to pay rent for public housing. School secretaries are paid well enough to cover food, rent, and then some more. My suspicion is that she used the money to fund a drug habit. I agree that locking her up will cost the state even more. I'd say that she should return the money, serve a year in jail and then sentence her to community service and bar her from any future jobs involving money. She needs to pay back to the community.
