2nd assault on female student near UH campus under investigation

LAST UPDATED: 01:15 a.m. HST, May 05, 2012

University of Hawaii's Campus Security is asking for information about a female student being grabbed and pulled toward a car while walking near Kanewai Park Thursday night, the second incident near the park in one day.

The UH Manoa student was walking alone toward campus on a sidewalk next to the Dole Street park about 10:30 p.m. when a car stopped behind her, Campus Security said. An unidentified male grabbed her by the arm and pulled her toward the car, then released the student when she yelled. The student couldn't provide a description of the male or the vehicle.

Campus Security said a UH Manoa student was sexually assaulted while leaving Kanewai Park about 3:30 a.m. Thursday. The student reported an unknown male grabbed her from behind, then ran away when other voices could be heard. The only description of the assailant was that he was tall.

Anyone with information in either case is asked to call Campus Security at 956-6911 or police at 911.

Why do these UH females walk by themselves? No brains! When they get assaulted, then they wonder why. Any woman that goes out or walk alone at night is only asking for trouble. I don't have sympathy for them. These college students should be smart enough to know better. But then, they might NOT BE SMART ENOUGH.

You sounds like the Taliban. That could be your daughter. More better a cute undercover policewoman in a miniskirt packing a 5906.

No, my daughter is smart enough NOT TO WALK ALONE AT NIGHT. Especially since an assault happened the night before.

Do not blame these UH students. Many of these UH students work part time jobs at night and live in the dorm however they have to park their car on Dole St and then walk on Dole St back to the dorm. Robbers and attackers know this as well and just lie in wait along Dole St. In the past HPD refused to allow off duty cops to be paid to patrol UH at night. This is how it is going to play out...Just like USC, some UH student will be brutally assaulted and/or murdered and ONLY then when HPD work with UH to hire a couple of off-duty cops to be paid to patrol UH from around 9pm to sunrise. In terms of money, UH has 14 million or so for a UH manoa chancellor and support staff but NO money to hire a couple of off duty HPD officers to protect UH students at night.

HawaiiNewsNow report said, the first assault happened after the female left a party around 3:30 a.m. at Kanewai Park. The second victim was dropped off by the park and was walking towards her dorm. These 2 assaults were not the result of parking their cars and walking back to their dorms. If they have to park their cars along Dole St., then they should be aware of potential harm. Carry some kind of weapon. Mace, stick, umbrella, knife, etc. One girl interviewed said she carries a knife in her purse. At least that one was thinking.

Maybe in this particular case my assumptions were incorect, however these numerous attacks, hijacks, thefts, assaults, etc. on UH students in the area of Dole st by the dorms and on UH campus at night has been going on for years and years and many students who where attacked were NOT coming back from a party but only trying to go to UH and get an education. In fact one year or so ago, a UH security guard was held up at knifepoint in front of UH students. I am all for license concealed carry in Hawaii but UH students should not be subject to this kind of brutality, fear and theft when there are options to keep them safe and UH is NOT protecting students because of POLITICS and MONEY.

In an ideal World, people should be able to walk alone late at night without getting assaulted. Unfortunately, that's not reality anywhere on this planet anymore. Hopefully, these incidences will heighten everyone's awareness... and lessen the probability of something more tragic from occurring.

HPD can enforce the law and capture criminals but some rational part of our judicial system has to enforce the penalties. Criminals are not afraid of the law because they are not afraid of jail time and know they will be released early anyway. How can we fix this? Until then, insanity continues..........

Just legalize concealed carry and that would inhibit a lot of these goons.

One can always expect that the UofH officials will place the matter "under investigation." How many of their investigations have resulted in arrests and prosecution. Their handling of these serious incidents is both comical and tragic.

1. Nice. Blame the victim. It's their fault. 2. How would being able to carry a weapon help? In the same effect, the "goons" could have been carrying a gun and the crime would have been something else. 3. When both of the victims have no description of the perp rather than "he was tall", it's going to be difficult ti find the criminal.

Sounds like time for a undercover sting......

No need for an undercover sting, just have REAL HPD off duty cops hired to protect UH students at night who are visible and will be the major deterrent to these kind of attacks or UH students. One great help would be for the cops to patrol Dole st at night and all of the murky characters sitting in cars on hanging out in the park, the cops can come right up to them and "talk story" with them (ie legally intimidate) and that will greatly discourage them from preying on UH students. In order for attacks to occur requires most of these punks and criminals to be stationary so they can "scope out" potential targets. HPD officers with guns and the backing of their fellow officers are the only "guards" who can truly intimidate thes punks to stop using UH as their "hunting ground".
