Hawaii County fire rescue personnel recovered the body of a 43-year-old Papaikou man discovered floating about 200 yards offshore at Onomea Bay in Hamakua on Saturday.
The man reportedly had been picking opihi in the area, police said.
A rescue helicopter was used to retrieve the body, which was first spotted about 1:30 p.m.
The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, police said. The victim's name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
