Police identify Hawaii island man found floating in Onomea Bay

Hawaii County police identified Monday a man who died Saturday at Onomea Bay north of Hilo as Paul Kaaukai, 43, of Papaikou.

He had reportedly been picking opihi alone in Onomea, police said.

Hilo patrol officers responded at 1:52 p.m. Saturday to a report of a body floating in Onomea Bay. When officers arrived, they found Fire Department personnel on shore with the lifeless body of a man. 

Kaaukai was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. 

An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the exact cause of death.
