UH coach Norm Chow in lower level of Sporting News ranking

By Ferd Lewis

LAST UPDATED: 08:33 a.m. HST, May 10, 2012

Norm Chow, who debuts as a head coach this season with the University of Hawaii, ranks 98th among 124 major college head football coaches in preseason rankings compiled by The Sporting News.

The magazine notes Chow's excellence as an assistant coach but says, "Is Chow head coaching material? You never know for sure until a guy gets that chance."

Former UH head coach June Jones, now of Southern Methodist,  is ranked 22nd while past Warrior assistants Paul Johnson (Georgia Tech), Ken Niumatalolo (Navy) and Rich Ellerson (Army) are Nos. 19, 35 and 79 respectively.

Alabama's Nick Saban heads the list and Boise State's Chris Petersen is No. 2.

This is good locker room billboard stuff for the players and the coaches. I do not think it really matter to anyone but the sportswriters anyways. Based on what we have seen from Coach Chow thus far I seriously think that it does not matter at all to him or his staff.

How do you rank someone who has never head coached a game? What BS but obviously they don't think much of our coach. Isn't that what most mainlanders think of people from Hawaii. We just ain't good enough? I take Coach Chow any day of the week.

PCWarrior - no need to make it an Hawaii against the Mainland issue, he's a Head Coach so that's why he's on the list. UH hasn't even played a game yet, so where would they rank him, at the top? However next years might be a different issue after they have something to guage it against.

What was Von Appen's ranking by the Sporting News when he was the head coach?

This kind of ranking does more good than bad, in my opinion. Everyone knows it doesn't really mean anything since the Warriors haven't played a single game under their new leader. Coach Chow will probably use this to fire up his staff and team. There's no doubt in my mind that things will be righted by the end of the year. I like what Coach has done by surrounding himself with quality assistants and establishing early on that he's a no-nonsense kind of guy who won't tolerate poor behavior. Hard but fair, can't complain about that. The time to judge is after he has had time to recruit and coach the right players for his system. After all, I don't think anybody believes that his past success has been a fluke. My guess, he will be ranked in the top 50 coaches by the end of the season. Really!

Let's look at the good: "ranks 98th among 124 major college head football coaches..." At least UH is considered a major college program!

I always feel that these type of rankings, including top 25 teams during regular season, by so-called football specialists are full of s**t.

Positive thinking is always good, unfortunately facts remains that he no other major college or NFL team previous to UH has given him a chance to become head coach. Also I am sure the guys handicapping all college teams are aware of the UH quarterback who was expected to be the No 1 or 2 quarterback, has now been suspended for at least one season and beyond. I hope Chow and UH is successful for everyone's sake, however for the coach to be visiting China on a church mission, all the while his star quarterback is recklessly driving drunk on Oahu's freeways and getting caught is not a good omen.

Chow hasn't coached a game yet so he has an excuse for being ranked 98th at this point. I wonder who's the 124th coach?
