Waikiki police catch purse-snatching suspect

By Star-Advertiser staff

Honolulu police captured a 19-year-old man who allegedly stole a purse from a woman who had stopped to take a night-time picture at Waikiki Beach early this morning.

Police said the woman put her purse down in the sand to take a picture of her friends at 1:05 a.m. when the suspect grabbed the purse and ran off. The woman gave chase, but the suspect eluded her. She reported the theft at the Waikiki Police substation.

Police issued a radio bulletin with a description of the suspect and an officer located a man matching the description.

The woman identified the suspect, a homeless man, and officers arrested him near the Hyatt Regency Hotel for investigation of second-degree theft.
