UH-Manoa's incoming chancellor has big aspirations for athletics

By Ferd Lewis

LAST UPDATED: 01:32 p.m. HST, May 18, 2012

In his first comments about athletics to the media, University of Hawaii-Manoa chancellor-designate Tom Apple left little doubt about the conference he'd like to see UH eventually join.

"I won't go dreaming about where we might be, but there is a really good conference out on the West Coast that it would be wonderful to be part of, eventually," Apple said today, alluding to the Pacific-12.

"And, there are schools that I'd certainly like to be mentioned with in the same breath. So, I think the idea that we try to aspire to be a great university that is thought of in the company of the other great universities is something that we should think about for athletics," Apple said.

Apple, provost of the University of Delaware, was announced as Manoa's next chancellor at Thursday's Board of Regents meeting.

Apple said, "I really believe in many ways you are judged somewhat by the company you keep and, so, I think it is important to have your athletic programs in the best company of universities."

I agree with you, onwardupward. But, in addition, what kind of message is this to send to the athletic conferences UH has just joined? Pretty dumb comment in terms of diplomacy and good relations with the other schools in those conferences. Also about as realistic as one-time UH president Dobelle coming on board with promises of a national championship in football. That, obviously, will never happen...not will UH ever be admitted to the Pac 12. Get over it. Now, how about discussing the real problems at UH Manoa, Mr. Chancellor? Like rising tuition rates and inadequate financial aid for students, like buildings that are falling apart, like faculty salaries that are falling further and further behind those at peer institutions, and like a bloated and overpaid administration?

And we, the tax payers, are paying him over 500Gs for this? Education should be priority one. not athletics. Besides, his former U of Delaware was second tier in sports. He is going to lead by example? Why does the UH always pick bozos like this?

Who said athletics was priority one for him?

It sounds as if the man was responding to a question about athletics. What was he supposed to say -- I don't care about athletics and don't intend to spend any effort on it? I think he gave a good answer, although setting the goal of someday joining the Pac 12 is the easy part. Getting there is another matter.

Joining the Pac 12? It'll happen when it starts snowing in Manoa. In other words, "never". They just laugh at UH and it's anemic academics.

Actions speak louder than words. Only time will tell what kind of committment he has to make UH a first rate athletic program.

He is getting paid 439,000.00 per year plus expenses, and he seems more focused on sports than academics. I hear the UH is going to build a 75,000,000.00 hula hoop arena.

Wonder if the new Chancellor has connections to computer maker Apple? Have them donate a half billion to the PAC 12 and we'll be in!!!

The posting of this Ferd Lewis article tells more about the priorities of the Star-Advertiser (i.e. readership numbers) than those of the new chancellor. Star-Advertiser, please tell us what Dr. Apple said about academics. OK, maybe it'll be in the Sat. paper.

There was an article overnight Thursday. The comments were very critical so the Staradvertiser withdrew the story. Google it

Hey, isn't UH an academic institution first and foremost??? Athletics is secondary so let's dedicate our selves to the main gole of UH EDUCATION FIRST.

Why do we always hire from the other side of the ocean? We sure have a whole bunch of qualified people who are already dreaming as big if not bigger and they will retire here and be part of our community instead of leaving for another post on the mainland. The last few so-called leaders for the UH System or Chancellor of UHM have not done all that much, have they? We talk of grow local for food, let us do so for leaders at UH.
