State Hospital escapee arrested after 1 day of freedom

A 25-year-old escapee from the Hawaii State Hospital is back at the facility after being on the run for a day, a state health official said..

Chad Nishihara, who was acquitted of manslaughter in 2008 and committed to the Hawaii State Hospital, left a Waikiki health facility on May 25 while on an approved outing.

State health officials said he returned to the Kaneohe facility voluntarily accompanied by family members the next day.

On Wednesday, Nishihara was arrested at the Kaneohe facility on a charge of second-degree escape, a hospital official. said.

Nishihira beat his uncle, 51-year-old Dennis Tamayose, in early February, 2006. He was 19 at the time. Tamayose, who sustained severe head injuries, died several weeks later. Nishihira was acquitted by reason on insanity.
