Hawaiian to launch Honolulu-New York City flights

Hawaiian Airlines will begin offering year-round flights between Honolulu and New York City today.

Daily service between Honolulu International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport begins today.

Inaugural Flight 50 — playing off the television show "Hawaii Five-0" — will depart Honolulu at 3:05 p.m. Monday and arrive in New York City at 6:55 a.m. Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Flight 51 will depart Kennedy airport at 10 a.m. and arrive in Honolulu at 3 p.m.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority estimates the new flights will generate $156 million in direct visitor spending and $17 million in state tax revenue annual for Hawaii's tourism economy.

Hawaiian will compete with United Airlines which flies daily non-stop to Newark, N. J.

My guess is HTA is assuming the new flights will be full of people who would not come to Hawaii without HAL’s direct flights from New York. I believe HAL’s flights will be full of people who would have come anyway, but by having to fly from the East Coast to Chicago or other major hubs to get a flight to Hawaii. While the HAL direct flights from New York might encourage a few more East Coast folks to come to Hawaii, I believe the increase will have little effect on direct visitor spending and state tax revenue.
