Navy identifies sailor who died in man-overboard incident off Oahu

The Navy today identified the sailor who died after going overboard from a Pearl Harbor-based destroyer as Troy Hunter, 32, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.

Hunter was a Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Petty Officer, the Navy said.

Hunter went overboard from the USS?Russell about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday while the destroyer was conducting operations about 50 miles off the coast of Oahu, the Navy said.

The ship’s search-and-rescue swimmer recovered Hunter, who was unconscious and not breathing. Crew administered CPR, but Hunter was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m., the Navy said.

Hunter enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 30, 2008 and was assigned to the Russell in January 2009. The Navy is investigating the incident.
