Gov. Neil Abercrombie has signed an emergency proclamation to authorize use of state money to stabilize erosion damage at Honoapiilani Highway on Maui.

The soil foundation under and adjacent to the section of Honoapiilani Highway in Launiupoko on the southeast shore of Maui, was damaged significantly by waves and heavy rains.

Lanes have been shifted about 18 feet around the damaged section. This section is a two-lane highway and the only ground route to west Maui.

Completion of the project is expected to take one year.
