An analysis shows a Hawaii island ocean science and technology park’s economic output to the greater Hawaii economy was $87.7 million.
The Economic Research Organization at the University of Hawaii released its analysis Tuesday, which found the economic impact of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority’s ocean science and technology park at Keahole Point is significantly larger than previously reported.
The park’s economic output generated $4.5 million in state tax revenue for 2010 and provided 583 jobs last year.
The park on 870 acres of prime coastal property is capable of bringing ashore warm surface and cold deep seawater at a rate of nearly 50,000 gallons per minute. It’s the only facility in the world that can do this.
