Governor lists bills for possible veto; July 10 is veto deadline

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Gov. Neil Abercrombie today notified the Legislature of 19 bills he may veto.

The measures remain under consideration, and he has until July 10 to decide whether to reject those measures. Abercrombie vetoed 17 bills last year. None were overridden.

“It is clear that the 2012 Legislative Session was productive and filled with meaningful legislation,” Abercrombie said in a news release. “Some of these measures, however, may be difficult to implement as they are currently written, and there are other measures that must be given further consideration.”

One bill on the list is House Bill 46, which would prohibit smoking in and around housing projects under the jurisdiction of the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, with an exception for designated smoking areas. It would allow for the state to evict people who violate smoking restrictions for a third time.

Any veto overrides by the Legislature would have to be done in a one-day special session, July 10.

“We will be reviewing the notification list over the next few days,” House Speaker Calvin Say said in a statement. “There is a majority caucus scheduled for Thursday to discuss the potential vetoes. We will have more information later in the week.”
