Rainbow Classic basketball tournament to return this year

By Ferd Lewis

POSTED:

After a year's absence, the venerable Rainbow Classic will return to the University of Hawaii men's basketball schedule this season, it was announced today.

The Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic will be held Nov. 9 and 11-12 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawaii, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Houston Baptist and Maryland-Eastern Shore will comprise the field, UH said.

The Rainbow Classic, begun in 1964, had been a part of the UH schedule for 47 years until last season when a series of scheduling problem forced a cessation.

UH said the remainder of the 2012-13 schedule will be announced later.

The days of national champions and players like Elvin Hayes and Pete Maravich participating in the Classic are long gone. Could these scrubs have beaten the Hawaii Marines teams of yesteryear?

This caliber of competition will not generate any excitement or additional ticket sales. This announcement is a Ho Hummer.
