A 16-year-old girl from California was injured in an apparent shark attack this morning off Lahaina, prompting officials to close the beach at least until the end of the day.

The incident occurred before 10 a.m. in waters fronting the Hololani Resort at 4401 Lower Honoapiilani Highway.

Maui fire department officials said the girl suffered a nearly 5-inch cut to her left calf.

Fire department personnel provided medical treatment and dressed the wound.

The family, from Livermore, Calif., declined medical transport and took the girl in their own vehicle to seek medical treatment.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Maui County Ocean Safety Division are treating the incident as a shark attack, county officials said.

The beach will remain closed until at least 6:45 p.m., when officials will assess whether to keep the beach closed or reopen it to the public.
