POSTED:

Kauai police arrested a Hanamaulu man on suspicion of first-degree arson after he reportedly set fire to his home Sunday night.

The 23-year-old man was being held in police cellblock in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Officers were sent to a Hoohana Street home shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, after receiving a report of a man armed with a knife who was setting fires inside.

Police were first on scene and took custody of the suspect.

Firefighters from the Lihue station arrived to the burning one-story home at 10:17 p.m. and had the blaze extinguished by 11 p.m.

The fire was contained to the bedroom, where it appears to have originated, according to fire inspectors.

The suspect's father reported minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Damage to the structure and its content is estimated at $60,000.

The incident remains under investigation.
