A family of seven and a tenant are homeless after fire destroyed a home on Houghtailing Street in Kalihi early this morning.

Two women, a teenager and three younger children ages 3 to 7, escaped without injury when the fire broke out at about 12:45 a.m.

The home was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived a few minutes later, said Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada.

Not much is left of the home this morning. The structure collapsed during the fire and because of that, it took firefighters until about 2 a.m. to bring the fire under control.

Damage is estimated at $170,000. In addition, a detached studio apartment, occupied by a man in his 40s, suffered smoke and heat damage estimated at $50,000.

The tenant was not injured.

The husband of one of the women was not home when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The American Red Cross is helping the family and the tenant with emergency assistance.
