Former Honolulu Police Chief Douglas Gibb died this morning in Des Moines, Iowa.

His death at age 72 was confirmed by retired Honolulu police Capt. Letha DeCaires.

Gibb served as police chief from 1983 to 1989. According to the department’s website, he was the third youngest chief in its history.

“It’s not easy being a chief of police, but he took it on with vigor and determination and class,” former Police Chief Boisse Correa said today. “He was a class act, so it really saddens me that he’s not longer with us.”

Gibb worked as vice president of security at First Hawaiian Bank after he left the department. He retired in 1998 and moved to Iowa to be near his daughter and grandchildren.

He also helped his daughter run a health food store there.
