"Hawaii Five-0" has cast award-winning actress and director Christine Lahti to play Doris McGarrett, the mother of Steve McGarrett who was thought to be dead until her son discovered her in the closing moments of the shows second season.

The 62-year-old Lahti won an Academy Award for short film in 1996 for directing "Leiberman in Love." As an actress, she was nominated for an best supporting actress Oscar in 1985 for her role in "Swing Shift." In 1998, she won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her role as Dr. Kathryn Austin in "Chicago Hope."

Lahti will appear as a recurring character, and Peter Lenkov, the shows executive producer, said fans are in for a treat.

The mysterious character of Doris McGarrett is a pivotal one to the mythology of our show and we are thrilled to have a seasoned and beloved actress such as Christine to portray her, Lenkov said in a statement. She's a wonderful addition to the H50 family and the fans will certainly enjoy what we have in store for her. Lets just say that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Lahti has also had recurring TV roles on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "Jack & Bobby."

"Hawaii Five-0" will start shooting its third season on Monday after a short blessing on set. Lahti is expected to attend.

Shame, a good local tita would have been perfect for that role.

I so wanted to like this show, but it sucks. I have no idea how it's still on the air, but I hope it stays for a while more. Hawaii needs the money it brings.
