A 61-year-old Kailua woman who told police she stabbed her boyfriend has been charged with first-degree assault.

Maydell Kahawaii Smith, of an Olomana Street address, remained at the main police station Tuesday night in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Police said Smith told officers responding to an argument at her home about 7:15 p.m. Monday that she just stabbed her 47-year-old boyfriend. The officers searched the area and found Smith’s boyfriend on a side street nearby. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, and Smith was arrested.

Police said the man’s condition has improved, but he remained hospitalized Tuesday.
