State, county crews contain stubborn brush fire on Kauai

State firefighters on Kauai plan to continue monitoring a fire that has burned about 660 acres at Pu‘u Ka Pele Forest Reserve in Kokee.
Forestry workers were able to contain the fire this morning after nine days, officials said.
The cost of the battle to date: $475,000.
Incident commander Patrick Porter, state protection forester for Kauai, said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The fire, which started early June 25, is in a west side watershed.
Porter said the fire was contained mainly to the ridges and a preliminary review indicated no endangered species were harmed. Most of the endangered species, including plants, are in valleys, he said.
“As far as we know, it didn’t affect any,” he said.
At one point, some 30 Division of Forestry and Wildlife workers joined other state and Kauai County firefighters in battling the blaze.
“The Kauai Fire Department really helped us out a lot,” Porter said.
