The U.S. Coast Guard and Hawaii County Fire Department are searching for a 15-year-old boy swept out to sea near Kealakekua Bay Wednesday evening.
Tyler Madoff and a 14-year-old boy were hiking with a group near the Captain Cook Monument near the bay Wendesday at about 2:45 p.m. when they stopped in a tidal pool and a wave washed both into rough ocean waters, the Coast Guard and Hawaii County Fire Department said. A boat rescued the 14-year-old boy, but Madoff remains missing.
The Coast Guard Cutter Ahi, a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter, the Hawaii County Fire Department helicopter and search and rescue crews and divers looked for the missing boy until darkness fell.
The Coast Guard searched through the night and the Fire Department rejoined the search this morning.
Madoff was last seen near the rocky shoreline fronting Kaawaloa Lighthouse, the fire department reported.
The 14-year-old boy went to Kona hospital. His condition was not released.Click here to download our mobile app for your iOS and Android device.
