The 21-megawatt Kaheawa Wind II project has begun commercial operations on Maui, according to Boston-based First Wind, the developer.

Kaheawa Wind II is located above Maalaea harbor and is adjacent to the 30-megawatt Kaheawa Wind I, which started commercial operations under an agreement with the Maui Electric Co. in 2006.

Kaheawa Wind I and II combined, can power up to 18,700 homes annually with their total 51 megawatts of generating capacity.

Kaheawa II includes a battery energy storage system to a help buffer fluctuations in energy output normally associated with wind turbines.
