Maui firefighters rescued a female stand-up paddler by helicopter Thursday after strong winds kept her from reaching the shore.
Firefighters were sent to Ukumehame Beach about 2:30 p.m. for a report of two stand-up paddlers in trouble about 500 yards out and unable to make their way in under windy conditions.
Firefighters plucked the 18-year-old Hilo woman from the water and brought her back to shore. The other paddler, a 22-year-old Wailuku man, paddled in on his own. Both paddlers declined medical attention.
