Hug triggers officer’s gun, kills woman in Detroit, say police

By Associated Press

POSTED:

DETROIT >> Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee says the contact that happened when a woman hugged an off-duty police officer from behind caused his gun to go off, fatally shooting her in the chest.

Godbee called Adaisha Miller's death at a party Sunday a tragic and "unfathomable" accident. Miller was celebrating what would have been her 25th birthday on Monday.

Godbee said Monday the gun was in a waist holster made of soft material that would have allowed the trigger to be pulled. He says there's no evidence the officer fired the gun. The chief believes the gun discharged after Miller hugged the officer around his waist.

He says that although it was a "freak accident," the officer is "very remorseful."

He is on desk duty while the case is fully investigated.

A worn slide belt holster has caused an accidental discharge before, so it is not impossible. The holster and firearm will undoubtedly be highly scrutinized. The previous incident involved a Glock in a worn Galco holster.
