POSTED:

Hawaii County police arrested a 61-year-old Kau man in connection with a shooting Sunday afternoon in Ocean View that wounded a man in the leg.

John O’Leary of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates was being held at the Kona police cellblock on suspicion of attempted murder and two firearm offenses.

Police said the shooting took place at O’Leary’s house in the 92-8000 block of Reef Parkway in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Police said the victim, a 66-year-old Ocean View man who is a longtime acquaintance of O’Leary, had gone to O’Leary’s house. O’Leary reportedly fired several shots, one of which hit the victim in his right upper thigh.

The victim struggled with O’Leary and took away his firearm, police said. O’Leary reportedly then hit the victim on the elbow with a baseball bat.

The victim drove home with the gun and called 911. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated and later released, police said.

Police recovered a .22-caliber revolver. Police did not immediately know what prompted the shooting.
