Kau man arrested in Hawaii island shooting

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Hawaii County police arrested a 61-year-old Kau man in connection with a shooting Sunday afternoon in Ocean View that wounded a man in the leg.

John OLeary of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates was being held at the Kona police cellblock on suspicion of attempted murder and two firearm offenses.

Police said the shooting took place at OLearys house in the 92-8000 block of Reef Parkway in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Police said the victim, a 66-year-old Ocean View man who is a longtime acquaintance of OLeary, had gone to OLearys house. OLeary reportedly fired several shots, one of which hit the victim in his right thigh.

The victim struggled with OLeary and took away his firearm, police said. OLeary reportedly then hit the victim on the elbow with a baseball bat.

The victim drove home with the gun and called 911. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said.

Police recovered a .22-caliber revolver. Police did not immediately know what prompted the shooting.
