A 45-year-old man who escaped from the Laumaka Work Furlough Center on June 25 was captured in the Lanakila area Monday morning, but not before putting up a fight that may result in additional charges against him.

The suspect attempted to evade converging police officers at about 10:15 a.m. by fleeing into a unit occupied by a man, 47, and holding him against his will until officers discovered the location on Ahiahi Place, police said. The suspect attempted to flee again and assaulted an officer in the process.

Other officers arriving on the scene arrested the man, who is being investigated for second-degree escape, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, kidnapping and unauthorized entry into a dwelling.

The officer who was assaulted was hospitalized, treated and released with non-critical injuries, police said.
