The Honolulu City Council voted 7-2 today to ban all commercial activity at Kailua Beach Park.
The bill is in response to Kailua residents who have argued that a once tranquil recreational area has been overrun by commercial enterprises that bring kayakers, kite boarders and others.
Members Romy Cachola and Breene Harimoto voted no, reasoning that it was too extreme and could affect the tourism industry and its employees.
The bill now goes to Mayor Peter Carlisle’s desk.
