Hawaii County police issued an alert about unlicensed contractors who approach elderly citizens to be hired by them for home projects such as power-washing and painting homes, paving driveways, performing auto body and mechanical repairs.
In a typical case, the unlicensed contractor asks for full payment in advance but does not complete the job or performs shoddy work, police said.
Police said consumers should ask for identification documents from people offfering to do work and their home, and to insist on a written contract that specifies conditions of the project, including a deadline.
Police ask that anyone who may have been victimized to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact the state Regulated Industries Complaints Office at 587-3222 or hawaii.gov/dcca/rico.
