Boy playing with lighter caused house fire at Ford Island

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

A 7-year-old boy playing with a lighter in a bedroom closet caused a fire that damaged a two-story house on Ford Island Friday, a Navy spokeswoman said.

The boy sustained minor burns to his arm and was treated at the scene by federal and Honolulu firefighters. The boy’s parents and two older siblings were not hurt, Agnes Tauyan, Navy spokeswoman.

Four Honolulu fire companies and three federal fire companies responded to the fire at 1043 West Virginia St. at 9:06 p.m. Friday.

Tauyan said firefighters brought the fire under control by 10 p.m. and confined it to a back bedroom of the four-bedroom home, but the entire second floor was heavily damaged by smoke and water. The first floor also sustained water damage.

The family spent the night with a neighbor.

Forest City, the Navy’s housing partner, is assisting the family with a new housing assignment and is working with their insurance company to determine a damage estimate, Tauyan said.
