13 spend an hour trapped in Waikiki elevator

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Thirteen people were stranded in an elevator at the Ilikai Hotel and Suites for more than an hour tonight.

Hawaii Fire Department personnel were first alerted around 6:45 p.m. and arrived at the hotel in about 10 minutes.

However, the elevator occupants had apparently attempted to free themselves by prying open the inner door then attempting to do the same with the outer doors, damaging the elevator doors and prolonging the ordeal, according to HFD spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada.

HFD workers remained in contact with the stranded visitors until a elevator repair person arrived to fix the problem.

All were able to exit the elevator shortly after 8 p.m.

Wow, hope all were safe and not too stressed. In the future, attempting to free oneself from a suspended elevator is highly dangerous.

Which elevator manufacturer dropped the ball? Otis or Western Electric?

True but their elevators are still in operation throughout Honolulu.

They, along with Amelco Elevator, installed "United States" elevators, of which there are still a few in operation. While most have been replaced with newer equipment, the maintenance of those remaining is spread among all the currently active elevator companies.

I've been an elevator repairman for 38 years. There's quite a few ways you could be trapped without any hope of escape. Just relax, we'll get you out.

I have worked in hotels with elevators for over thirty years, if trapped in an elevator press the emergency call button in the elevator or use the emergency phone, than just try to relax. Help will come. What the 13 people did in their attempt to escape was dangerous and once you damage the doors by forcing them open you only compound the problem becasue the elevator guys now have to fix two problems instead of one. The elevator will not operate with the doors jammed open which is what happens if you force the doors open. Its easy to force the inner doors open from the inside but almost impossible to force the outer door open. Listen to hawaiikone and relax.
