Cayetano admitted to hospital with bleeding ulcer

Former Gov. Ben Cayetano was admitted to the Queen’s Medical Center with what is believed to be a bleeding ulcer, his wife announced today.

Cayetano, who is running for Honolulu mayor, experienced symptoms Sunday and went to the emergency room, Vicky Cayetano said. He was admitted Sunday night and preliminary tests confirmed a bleeding ulcer, according to a statement from his campaign.

At a news conference, Cayetano said her husband was to have a procedure today known as an endoscopy, in which doctors use a tiny camera to examine the affected area and confirm the initial diagnosis. Once the ulcer is confirmed, the doctors can decide whether to “staple” it to prevent further bleeding or treat it with antibiotics. Both procedures can be done during the endoscopic procedure, she said.

“It’s not life-threatening at all,” Vicky Cayetano said, adding that doctors expected to be able to treat the ulcer with antibiotics and release him by Tuesday. “From everything we’ve been told by the doctors involved, this is treatable and he’ll be back to his full schedule, we think, by Wednesday.”

Cayetano is facing incumbent Mayor Peter Carlisle and former city managing director Kirk Caldwell in Saturday’s mayoral election. The former governor is the front-runner, according to the Hawaii Poll done last month for the Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now.

He is the only one opposed to the city’s planned $5.26 billion rail project.

Cayetano was born on Nov. 14, 1939, which means he will be just a few days shy of 73 yrs. old on General Election day. Ben's wife said it's the stress and hard work these past months that caused the bleeding ulcer -- which is the most serious type. Perhaps for his own good Ben should drop out of the race. As those above said, health comes first.

The first indicator of anti-rail sentiment is in. The early voting in CD2 via absentee ballot has already been counted via a "kind of" exit poll via CivilBeat. The voters thinking they were voting against the Rail candidate Mufi, voted in droves for the real Rail candidate Tulsi. The first reliable polling is out that can be cross-speculated into the Mayor's race. Mufi loses, but Ben wins. Congressman Gabbard appears to be victorious. Personally, glad I don't live in CD2; but happy if the indicator is anything that will come out on Saturday. Any strong Mufi defeat means curtains for Rail be speculative reasoning. Absentee is 20 percent of the Primary vote in Honolulu this election. Hope the logic holds true.

Cayetano was born on Nov. 14, 1939 according to the 1981 Hawaii State Bar Directory. That means he will be 73 yrs. old just after the general election. He is too old and sickly to be Mayor. If his natural state of health is so poor that he can't stand the campaign without being admitted to the hospital, imagine if he becomes Mayor. He should stay retired. Besides at that age, he is too grumpy an old man to be Mayor.

If you were really educated, you would know that his GI bleed is so not serious that the physicians did not even have to cauterize the ulcer. That means it is treatable with a few days of antibiotics without threat of poor outcome, unlike the syphilis eating away your brain that can only be cured with self decapitation. If Ben is too old to serve, then that makes 90 year old Dan older then the dust that Ben f-a-r-t-s.

The bleeding ulcer is recurring and is the tip of the ice berg as far as his health is concerned. Haven't you heard that just like Harry Kim on the Big Isle, Ben's speech when being interviewed is slurred. Old age and poor health are legitimate election issues. Inouye's speech slurs also. Maybe both Ben and Inouye are too old to be in office.

An ulcer that does not require cauterization upon being identified via endoscopy is not a serious health issue at all. Sorry.
