SAN JOSE, Calif. >> An Alaska Airlines flight bound for Seattle from the Los Angeles area has made an emergency landing at the San Jose airport in Northern California because of multiple problems.

Federal Aviation Administration officials tell the San Jose Mercury News the flight landed safely at 7:45 a.m. today, about an hour and 17 minutes after it took off from the airport in Ontario, about 37 miles east of Los Angeles.

The plane apparently experienced electrical, pressurization and flight control problems.

Sometimes the words "emergency landing" show a little bit more concern than is necessary. Being a pilot for many years, you declare an emergency for two reasons--one to get priority for landing and the next--equally important--get on terra firma ASAP. Pilots don't take these lightly. An occupation filled with hours of boredom followed by moments of stark terror.
