UH to search nationally for new athletic director

University of Hawaii at Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple said today the school will conduct a national search to find a successor for athletic director Jim Donovan.

Donovan was reassigned Sunday after being cleared of wrongdoing in the Stevie Wonder concert controversy.

UH vice president Rockne Freitas is the acting AD, but Apple said the school will likely hire a search firm to assist in selecting a permanent athletic director.

Apple said that Donovan is free to apply for the position if he chooses.

The chancellor said the school wants "someone who can take us to the next level."

Apple declined to say what Donovan's new title is.

Search is done for EOE purposes. Freitas will slide right into the job and if not, it will be another nepotism slot being filled.

He did nothing wrong but still lost his position?!?! This makes no sense at all. He has done a great job with our athletics program in probably the most turbulent times it has seen. Between coaching changes and conference realignment, he has put UH in the best realistically possible position.

I agree! Where are the compliance, accounting and assistant AD's. The process must have regulations and processes that not only protect any wrong doing but also protect the administrators from being exposed to this type of situation. Most local athletic club organizations managing $2,000.00 have to have some board motion and vote and two signatures required to releasing checks?

He did nothing wrong but can't get his old job back? How stupid does UH think people are? He's being given a job for $200,000 plus for three years but they don't have a title for it yet? He can't get his old job back but he's free to apply for the ad job? What kind of nonsense is this? What a joke. And hey UH, what happened to the money? How did we get swindled and what have we done to insure this does not happen again?

Someone mentioned on another blog that the higher ups did not listen to Jim Donovan's recommendations concerning the concert. Looks like this is not about saving Donovan, but about saving people on upper campus.

Jim Donovan's new title will be Goofer. The position of Goofer, carries with it a salary of 211K. Jim Donovan will be the highest paid Goofer, in the Nation. Would not be surprised if that search firm is headed by Tsutsui and Takai. Can we also say, that new AD will have a salary of 2M.

Hire a new search firm!!!! Spend more money! How much did it cost to conduct this bogus investigation into the missing money? We still paying McMuffin, Hinshaw, now pay Donovan the rest of his contract, give him more money, and another job in the school?Spend more money on the new AD? This is crazy!!! All this, 3 DUI's and we haven't even played a game yet!!

State university. Have to follow certain laws one which is advertising the position. So UH will waste 10sof thousands conducting bogus interviews. Paying for air, hotels and meals for candidates, then hire Rockne for da job anyway.

You have to admire how UH defines "accountability." If not criminal, then incompetent. So instead of reinstating him and letting his contract expire, they give him 3 more years, at a very high salary out of thin air. You have to appreciate living in a State where no one is held accountable for anything! Uhh, if I don't pay my state taxes, due to my incompetence, do you think I will get to skate too? I hope so.

Com'mon ladies and gentlemen- how can you even ask the citizens of Hawaii and businesses to support this University with this kind of leadership. - do you care Board of Regents- seriously do you care about the people of Hawaii and the students at the university or do you folks just want the paycheck and the benefits of being a state employee - is that what being a part of the Board is all about for your folks- lifetime heathcare and a salary ????/ Ms Mataoshi - a recent appointee is and a true leader of the Red Cross over the last 10 years has the ability to lead. Please Ms Mataoshi - dare to be different - and lead and challenge the lack of caring by the current Board of Regents. Where is Marjorie Bronster when we need her. ? Please Governor Abercrombie- challenge this Board to step up to the plate and lead . For those of you who donated to the Foundation - hold your money back until there is accountability here .........I am going to.

AD openings at D-1 schools are few and far between. There are top notch former AD's, current mid-major AD's, and BCS conference assistant AD's who would all bring big time qualities to the job. Let's hope we don't go down the road of overmatched local yokels (Yoshida and Donovan) or politically correct hires (Frazier by Dumbelle). UH has not gotten it right with a top tier AD since Sheriff. An unrigged and unbiased search should secure a real deal AD.

This incident could have happened to the best AD in the country and the legal team which saw the contract for the concert. Jim was just trusting the pro's who should haved known. God Bless

say it isn't so. The UH will spend at least $100k on this search. We'll lure some unsuspecting AD who has been released from some second-tier school for performance issues, and the Regents will vote to award him more than Donovan was making because that's the going rate in Arkansas or wherever. Donovan was doing a good job and got tricked in the Stevie Wonder scam. MRC and Hinshaw should be falling on their swords beside him instead of standing silently in the shadows letting Tom Apple front the five-spiral crash that is Donovan's reassignment. Why would anyone want to support a school that's run by such lightweights?

Seems like things just keep getting worse at UH since they began bringing in outside "talent" to head the school. For sure, the bad situation has accelerated with Hinshaw and Greenwood. Then they bring in Apple at a huge salary with the only justification being Greenwood saying he's worth it. Now this, with a new position being created for Donovan, which is obviously a pay off to keep his mouth shut. The whole situation smells like week-old fish and bears investigating. Seems like our outside talent has created a country club retirement plan for themselves and their friends. In the meantime we get stuck with the bill and students keep paying higher tuitions. ENOUGH!! The governor needs to sic Marion Higa on them.
